CHAPEL HILL

Helen Jeter Giduz died August 19, 2017, of old age eight weeks after a fall in her home in Chapel Hill. She was 91.

She was born April 26, 1926, in Union, S.C., as the only child of the late Myrtle Tracy Jeter.

She graduated from Union High School in 1943, and earned a degree in business at the University of South Carolina in 1946. She was a teaching assistant at USC, then earned a master's degree in business at Columbia University in New York. It was there that she met her husband, the late Roland Giduz of Chapel Hill. They were married on Christmas Day 1949, and remained true to each other until his death in 2009.

After a year in New York City, Helen and Roland returned to Chapel Hill where she worked as town clerk and as a bookkeeper for Danziger's Restaurant. She also co-founded with Roland The Triangle Pointer, a weekly visitors guide they published for about 20 years.

She was a fastidious homemaker, unwavering supporter of her three sons and active member of University Presbyterian Church. She was on the Board of Trustees at Durham Academy in the 1960s, and was active in the Chapel Hill Friends of the Library.

She and Roland had the opportunity to travel much of the globe, and they enjoyed life by the ocean at their home in Myrtle Beach. The door to their home was always open, and Helen welcomed many friends, expected and not, who came to visit. She also nurtured wildlife at her home, feeding deer, birds, foxes and "Grundoon" the groundhog.

She is survived by her three sons and their families—Bill and Ellen Giduz of Davidson and their children Jenny and Luke; Bob and Lee Carol Giduz of Lenoir, N.C., and their children Hannah, Baker and Molly; and Tom and Betsy Giduz of Chapel Hill and their children Katie and Natalie. In addition, she had two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Hazel Giduz.

The family thanks the kind staff of Carol Woods for nurturing and caring for Helen in her final days. A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at University Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be donated to The Friends of the Chapel Hill Library or the Bluebird Society.
