James Thomas Jeter III

Spartanburg – James Thomas “Jay” Jeter III, 74, husband of Mary Linda Burnett Jeter, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. Jay fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Whitmire, SC, he was the son of the late C.B. Jeter, Sr. and Evelyn Suber Jeter of Whitmire, SC. He graduated from Whitmire High School in 1964 as Salutatorian. Then Jay attended Furman University where he graduated with honors and a BA in Economics and Business. In 1978 he graduated from Winthrop University with a M. ED. He taught math at Union High School, 1973-1978; and then at Spartanburg High School, 1978 – 2010.

He served in the S.C. Army National Guard for six years and was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Jay is survived by his wife Linda; daughter, Jayne Jeter and her husband Adam Bailey of Decatur, GA; his brother-in-law, Stephen Burnett of Greenville, SC; his nephew, Tony Ramsey and wife Cheryl of Whitmire, SC; his niece, Susan Ballinger and husband David; two great nephews and their wives and one great niece and her husband; one great-great niece and one great-great nephew, all of Simpsonville, SC, and one niece-in-law and one great nephew of Santuc, SC.

He was predeceased by his brother, C.B. Jeter, Jr. and wife Brenda of Union, SC; his sister, Betty Ramsey and husband Tony of Whitmire, SC; one niece and one nephew of Union, SC and one nephew of Santuc, SC.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there will be a private family interment at the Jeter Cemetery in Santuc, SC

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society; 150 Dexter Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29303; Covenant Presbyterian Church; 880 W.O. Ezell Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29301; or the charity of one’s choice.
